Mentoring & Advising
Mentoring Opportunities
A recent WE@RIT survey of female engineering students here at RIT found that while most students have not had an engineering mentor, almost everyone surveyed wished they had had one during their first years at RIT. In response to this need, WE@RIT has developed the Mentorship Program. The WE@RIT Mentorship Program will be unique from the existing RIT Mentoring Program co-sponsored by RIT's Alumni Network and the Offices of Cooperative Education and Career Services. While RIT's institute-wide program encourages networking between experienced professionals and students, the WE@RIT program will pair upper level students with first and second year female engineering students for formal and informal activities, including monthly meetings and suggested weekly activities. With this program, WE@RIT can provide female undergraduate engineering students with effective strategies that can lead first to successful completion of their engineering education and then prepare them for future careers as engineers.
RIT also subscribes to MentorNet, an award-winning, nonprofit e-mentoring network that addresses the success and retention of women in engineering, science, and mathematics. Through MentorNet, you can develop a one-on-one, email-based mentoring relationship with a woman engineer working in industry.
Advising
The Kate Gleason College of Engineering uses a team-based approach to offer comprehensive support services for our students. You'll find helpful staff members, professors, tutors, and counselors in all areas of the college. Our engineering college has many women engineering role models who care about your success. 10% of our engineering faculty are women, and 75% of them are active members of the WE@RIT Internal Advisory Board. The College of Engineering also recognizes the importance of providing a variety of advising and support services designed to ensure your academic success. Upon entrance to the college, you will be assigned an academic advisor. Advisers in the College of Engineering and elsewhere at RIT can help you more thoroughly understand your academic subjects, discuss high school-college transition issues, discover your own learning style, and develop study skills that will optimize your program of study at RIT.
