Message from the Dean

Dean PalmerSeveral years ago RIT decided to initiate a process leading to the creation of the first Ph.D. program in our Kate Gleason College of Engineering. We are now celebrating a culmination of that process with the launch of our interdisciplinary program in Microsystems Engineering, the first such program in United States.

Our new Ph.D. program, because it is based on a combination of several engineering disciplines, has not changed the focus of our highly-rated undergraduate degree programs in electrical, computer, industrial, mechanical, microelectronic and software engineering. Each of these programs has been developed to provide an outstanding education for undergraduate students.

We have decided to offer a doctoral program in Microsystems Engineering because we believe this program will increase RIT’s partnerships with business and industry, help us develop expanded cooperative education and placement opportunities, and increase research opportunities for all of our students.

RIT’s time-honored and distinctive approach to undergraduate education has not changed. We continue to focus on four major principles that underlie and distinguish engineering education at RIT. They are:

  • Excellent teaching
  • Learning by doing
  • Working as a team
  • Exploring real-life, industry-inspired problems

These principles drive everything that we do in our classrooms and laboratories. Our cooperative education program (co-op) remains among the leading programs in the world, and our emphasis on this will not waiver. Our faculty’s top priority is teaching. They complement their teaching with research and ongoing contact with the world of work.

Our ability to offer incredible laboratories, teaching, and research facilities for our students is stronger than ever as a result of our recently completed renovation of the James Gleason building and our planned expansion of that facility. Our commitment to undergraduates is further enhanced by our recent expansion of industry partnerships, an increased emphasis on interdisciplinary and team-based projects, the development of the RIT Honors Program, and our increased emphasis on providing engineering students with opportunities for an international experience.

As Dean, I’m excited about our progress and the future for the Kate Gleason College of Engineering. In each of the past two-years, our entering classes have enrolled the most talented and diverse group of engineering students in RIT’s 174-year history. We are strongly committed to making the engineering experience exceptional for the talented and motivated students attracted to our college.

If you have not already done so, I hope you will visit us to see our campus, tour our outstanding facilities, and meet with our dedicated faculty and students. I believe that if you do, you will come to share the excitement we have about what we are doing and where we are headed.

Sincerely,

Harvey Palmer
Dean,
Kate Gleason College of Engineering
