John D. Hromi, D. Engr., is Professor Emeritus at Rochester
Institute of Technology's John D. Hromi Center for Quality
and Applied Statistics. Known internationally as an educator,
practitioner and consultant in the field of quality control,
Dr. Hromi founded the Center for Quality and Applied Statistics
which now bears his name, and for eight years served as Frederick
H. Minett Distinguished Professor. Dr. Hromi is a popular
speaker on quality-related subjects, and is the author of
many papers on applied statistics, quality management, education
and training. His seminars have focused on statistical quality
control, quality engineering, quality management, and human
resource development.
Dr. Hromi previously held the position of Chairman and Professor
of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Lawrence Institute
of Technology. Before joining LIT, he was employed by Ford
Motor Company as a Principal Staff Engineer in the Environmental
and Safety Research Office, and as Manager of the Engineering
Methods Department of the Engineering Staff.
Dr. Hromi received a BS degree in mathematics from Carnegie
Institute of Technology, a BEE degree from Clemson University,
an MLitt degree in mathematics from the University of Pittsburgh,
and a doctorate in engineering from the University of Detroit.
An ASQC fellow, Dr. Hromi is the Society's Past President
and Board Chairperson, and has served also as Vice President,
Section Affairs; Treasurer; Director-at-Large to the Board;
and Awards Board Chairperson. He was the recipient of the
ASQC Automotive Division's C.C. Craig Award. He also has an
award for excellence in quality and reliability from the Institute
of Industrial Engineers, and he is the 1987 recipient of the
prestigious E.L. Grant Award made by the American Society
for Quality Control for his activities in establishing and
implementing educational programs enhancing the professionalism
of quality assurance ethics and practices. Further, Dr. Hromi
is ASQC's 1993 Edwards Medalist in recognition of outstanding
leadership in the application of modern quality control methods,
especially through the organization and administration of
such work. The 1996 E. Jack Lancaster Award was presented
by ASQC for recognition of his activities in establishing
and implementing strong international relationships; for his
recognition as an outstanding quality professional by many
countries; and for promoting education of quality technology
throughout the world. Also, he is a member of the International
Academy for Quality, an organization of specialists dedicated
to creating and improving quality standards, and is listed
in the International Who's Who in Quality. Dr. Hromi was also
honored in Melbourne, Australia where International Quality
Management Pty. Ltd. gave its Quality Training Center his
name.
Dr. Hromi is an Honorary Member of the Philippines Society
for Quality Control, a member of the Asia Pacific Quality
Organization, and an Associate Member of the European Organization
for Quality. He has served as member of the Registrar Accreditation
Board, Associate Member of the European Organization for Quality,
Editor of The Best on Quality book series issued
by the International Academy for Quality, and Associate Editor,
Quality Engineering.
