Online Learning

RIT has distinguished itself as offering one of the premiere online-learning programs in the nation. Since 1979, when the university offered its first distance-learning course, RIT has been a leader in the use of electronic forms of communication for course interaction. Our online-learning courses have the same objectives, rigorous workload, tuition and academic credit as our on-campus courses. The MS degree and the advanced, graduate, certificates are available through online learning.

No distinction is made between taking courses on campus or through online learning. In particular, programs earned partly or entirely through online learning are registered by the New York State Department of Education and are accredited by the Middle States Association of the Council for Higher Education. (The United States organizes their accrediting bodies regionally, and the Middle States is the highest regional accreditation available. So this should be considered as a national accreditation.)

Every online-learning course offered by the center meets RIT's rigorous standards. Courses, in addition to the textbook, typically feature CDs or other media that are professionally prepared for online learners, not simply videos of recent lectures. These are accompanied by viewing guides. Courses may also include additional software, CDs, and other material.

Because online-learning courses are designed for the motivated professional who is not able to attend on-campus classes, we recommend enrollment to those over 25 years of age with at least three years of professional employment.

Strategies for Success

  • Take (core) courses early in the program.
  • Be sure you meet course prerequisites.
  • Fill out the Plan of Study form, discuss it with your advisor, and get it approved by your advisor.
  • If you are a full-time worker, you will usually learn more if you take one course each semester. You may find that you do not have the time to really learn the material if you try taking two courses each semester. This is especially true of the more advanced courses.
