Statistician Job Outlook

The demand for statisticians is high and continues to grow significantly. The major driver of this growth is that our global society is becoming increasingly data-rich and data-dependent.

For instance, Peter Sondergaard, head of research at Gartner, one of the world’s leading information technology research and advisory companies, predicts that millions of statisticians and data analysts will be needed globally to manage Big Data–related projects. Big Data refers to large data sets that are collected from every imaginable source and analyzed by businesses to discover ways of creating new revenues. By 2015, predicts Sondergaard, the thirst for Big Data mining experts is expected to create 4.4 million jobs around the world; nearly half (1.9 million) of these new data analysis jobs will be in the United States alone.

Separately, a recent study by McKinsey Global Institute predicts that the United States will need vastly more professionals—between 140,000 and 190,000—with expertise in statistical methods by 2018.

And, there appears to be no apparent end to this growing need for statisticians, making it a solid and rewarding—both personally and financially—career choice for today’s secondary school and university students.

The Registrar’s Office is responsible for the implementation, maintenance, and training for all student information system functions related to student academic records and courses. In this role the office is required to support the data and information needs of every academic unit on campus and also support the need for student records related data for student service units on campus. The office is also responsible for ensuring the integrity and the security of academic data. A new student information system has brought many additional complexities and opportunities to use systems and data to support institutional goals. The successful candidate will play an important role in supporting and leading the efforts of the office to use data to support strategic initiatives in the office and more broadly in Academic Affairs. 
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Develop new and enhance existing reports using contemporary reporting and analysis tools (e.g. PS Query, SAS, OBIEE). Requires the ability to understand a complex set of data tables and data joins. Requires a high level of skill and knowledge about analytical tools as well as the vast variety of student and academic data at RIT. Uses advanced programming to analyze complex data structures.
  2. Assists with the development, implementation and management of a comprehensive reporting strategy to support RIT colleges and academic departments.
  3. Develop and maintain a series of reports to audit the integrity of student data and to support accurate and efficient processing of transactions.
  4. Provide analysis and reports to support strategic goals in the Registrar’s Office and more broadly in Academic Affairs.
  5. Meets with internal and external customers to gather and/or clarify requirements. Performs detailed analysis and documentation of requirements to determine the best solution for meeting stated needs.
  6. Assists in the development of appropriate documentation of PeopleSoft Enterprise Campus Solutions and creates and maintains test scripts used in regression testing critical to successful system upgrades and enhancements.
  7. Implements compliance with Information Security Standards outlined by the Institute Security Office as it relates to student information.
  8. Provides basic support for office computers. Ensures that computers have up-to-date security programs and patches installed. Coordinates service requests with ITS.
  9. Assist in validating and supporting third party interface components utilizing Student Records data.
  10. Maintains and builds new components of the Registrar website using content management systems (Drupal).
  11. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
 
  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in a data management-related field, and two to three years of experience in a data management position using large data sets, software applications, and computer report writing skills; 
  • Demonstrated proficiency with query tools (PSQuery, SQL, OBIEE) and statistical applications (such as SPSS or SAS) or equivalent software;
  • Experience working with highly confidential information and maintaining security standards preferred;
  • Excellent analytical and quantitative skills;
  • High attention to detail and accuracy;
  • Must possess exceptional written and oral communication; strong customer service orientation; as well as a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with other departments;

Position Summary: The Sr. Strategic Quality Engineer is a highly visible member of the global R&D Strategic Quality Team, responsible to provide leadership, training and expertise in DfSS and Reliability tools in support of Brady’s New Product Development teams.   Strategic Quality is the interface across the complete NPD process, from Marketing to Manufacturing.  The role of Strategic Quality is to identify and drive best practices to achieve the broad definition of Quality, assure delivery of Robust Products, and be a change agent to continually improve our NPD process. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Train and support New Product Development (NPD) teams in the development and execution of Quality and Test plans to assure robust product design and manufacture.
  2. Provide Quality Oversight to NPD projects to assure Robust Products.
  3. Serve as the Strategic Quality approver for Stage Gate requirements.  These include Quality Plans, Test Plans, and Validation results.
  4. Interface with functions outside of R&D to establish and align quality requirements.
  5. Provide 1:1 coaching, training, and technical direction for application of DfSS tools (MBB and BB level).
  6. Lead improvement initiatives for the R&D NPD function as assigned, including the development of standard templates and best practices.

Data Services Adjunct: Quantitative Data Analysis Specialist

New York University's (NYU) Data Services, a joint ITS and Library service, is seeking a part-time (20-25 hours per week) Quantitative Data Services Adjunct Specialist to provide quantitative research computing support to faculty, students, and staff at NYU.

Duties Include:

Providing consultation on a walk-in and appointment basis, leading Data Services instructional tutorials, and preparing Data Services training documentation, with a primary focus on statistical software packages such as Stata, R, MATLAB, SAS and SPSS. Eligibility:

Preferred Education: Master's degree in Statistics, Sociology, Economics, Psychology, Mathematics, Political Science or related quantitative-focused field.

Required Experience:

  • 1-3 years relevant experience or an equivalent combination
  • 1-3 years of experience conducting quantitative academic research with at least two of the following statistical software packages: Stata, R, MATLAB, SAS and SPSS.
  • Proficiency of commonly used statistical and data-oriented methods, including: data cleaning, t-tests, ANOVA, linear regression and generalized linear models.
  • Excellent public service, communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience teaching quantitative software packages and/or research methods
  • Experience in an academic environment, preferably in IT and/or Libraries
