Electrical Engineering at RIT is a blend of the theoretical and experiential. The program has been carefully crafted to prepare electrical engineering students for immediate entry into the workplace or to pursue advanced graduate study. The program weaves 8 academic semesters with 2 semesters and 2 summer on-site cooperative education over a five year period to provide the prospective engineer a rich learning environment and immediate opportunities for professional employment. Over 300 companies come to RIT to recruit our graduates.
Electrical Engineering Freshman class enrollment is limited to about 125 to maintain individual class size at a maximum of 45 students. Course instruction is organized for studio-style pedagogy, where the use of laboratory instrumentation and exercises are inserted with lecture material to demonstrate important engineering concepts. Laboratories and studio classrooms are equipped with the latest instrumentation and computing facilities. Students are afforded an open access lab policy.
Students are immersed in the electrical engineering profession beginning the first semester of the freshman year, with Electrical Engineering Freshman Practicum. Other EE courses offered during the first two years include digital systems design, circuit theory, semiconductor devices, and programming. These courses provide hands-on experience and introduce the student to computer-aided-design (CAD) tools, fabrication technologies, programming methods, and laboratory practice that will serve them throughout their academic and professional careers. More importantly the hands-on exercises serve to stimulate the curiosity of the developing mind, bring relevance to the theoretical training in the classroom, provide a practical foundation for significant senior capstone projects, and fire the passion for this exciting profession.
Five program options are available to students. The traditional EE program emphasizes the breadth of electrical engineering by exposing the student to many electrical engineering sub-disciplines. Students with an interest in computing technology and software can take the Computer option without sacrificing a solid understanding of electrical engineering core material. The Renewable Energy option provides additional emphasis on power, renewable and green energy. The Robotics option offers a multidisciplinary concentration to EE students by exploring courses in Robotics, BioRobotics, and Artificial Intelligence. The Wireless Communication option is ideal for those who want to be educated within the framework of the traditional electrical engineering program, but also want to incorporate the theoretical and practical skills required for understanding, designing and evaluating wireless communication systems. Students with a GPA of 3.4 or higher can enroll in the combined BS/MS option, an accelerated program, which enables the student to receive a BS and an MS degree within a nominal five-year period.
