RIT ISE STUDENT TEAM EARNS THIRD PLACE IN MATERIAL
HANDLING COMPETITION
The student team of third year students formed by Jason
Kistner, Sarah Ballard, Joshua Dennie, and Emily Johnson placed
third in the 2003-2004 Material Handling Student Design Competition,
sponsored by the College Industry Council on Material Handling Education
(CICMHE) and Modern Materials Handling magazine. The 3rd place award
includes $500 to be split among the team members and $500 to the
ISE department. Andres Carrano (ISE Assistant Professor) served
as the faculty advisor for the team.
The competition consisted in designing the entire facilities and material
handling systems for a Vital Vitamins (a vitamin and weight management
manufacturer and distributor). The design recommended by the RIT team
was highlighted with an investment of $1.3 million, labor requirements
of 80 employees, and floor space needs of 164,000 square feet. The
material handling system incorporated several carousels, an overhead
monorail, order picking forklifts and a bar coding system.
