ISE Students, Runners-up in Simulation Contest
The RIT Simulation Team - "Sky Simulation" - made
up of Katie McConky, Josephine Ryan, and Burcak Guclu, undergraduate
students in the Industrial & Systems Engineering Department were
runners-up in the Tenth International IIE/Rockwell Software Simulation
Contest. The contest includes a preliminary competition from which
only 5 finalist teams are selected to compete at the Institute of
Industrial Engineers (IIE) annual conference which was held in Houston,
Texas in May, 2004. For their efforts, the team was awarded $500 cash
and $1000 for travel expenses. The IIE Student Chapter also received
$250. Dr. Michael Kuhl served as the faculty advisor for this competition.
This competition consisted of designing a paint factory. Students
were given a description of the paint production process along with
the labor and machine specifications that could be used in the factory.
The objective was to construct a system that could meet the expected
demand at the least cost. The system configuration recommended by
"Sky Simulation" was estimated to have an initial investment
of $5,120,000 and to generate a profit of $324,000 per week.
