Welcome to the P3 Workgroup website!

The P3 workgroup at Rochester Institute of Technology was founded in Spring 2004 by faculty and students in the Kate Gleason College of Engineering. The purpose of this effort is to advance sustainability by increasing the level of awareness on all sustainability dimensions among students, so that they can later make a positive impact on our planet and society. Alumni from our group are particularly sensitive with respect to how our actions and decisions alter the ecological footprint, poverty and overall biological capacity of the earth.

We achieve these goals via course teaching, research (master theses and independent studies), undergraduate multidisciplinary design teams, volunteer work, international collaborations, trips to developing countries, as well as through publications, seminars and conference presentations. Topics of utmost interest to the group are U.N. Millennium goals, alternative sources of energy (biodiesel and solar, among others), life cycle assessment, green logistics, as well as solar-based cookers and water pasteurizers. The roots and the name of this effort originates from the P3 philosophy of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) encompassing people, prosperity and planet This a more global and comprehensive definition of sustainability that the previous P2 effort (pollution prevention).

If you would like to become involved with the P3 Workgroup, please contact Dr. Andres Carrano or Dr. Brian Thorn.
