INFORMS Simulation Society Research Workshop

Simulation: At the Interface of Modeling and Analysis

We encourage proposals for papers and for sessions on the general theme of using simulation for making better decisions.  Workshop sessions will be organized around three 30 minute presentations.

The theme of the conference is Simulation: At the Interface of Modeling and Analysis.  More specifically, the topics include the following:

¨ Identifying innovative methods to significantly advance the use simulation for decision making though the interface of modeling and analysis.

¨ Identifying and discussing the strengths and limitations of existing simulation techniques in terms of both modeling and analysis capabilities.

¨ Promoting the interaction between the simulation modeling research and the simulation analysis research communities

¨ Discussing the role of sensitivity analysis, uncertainty analysis, the robustness of decisions to modeling assumptions, implementation issues, and special considerations that arise in specific applications.

¨ Addressing practical, statistical, and computational performance aspects of integrated modeling and analysis methods and research areas.

¨ Identifying the modeling and analysis demands are placed on existing simulation tools that are used in a variety of applications.

¨ Proposing collaborative research methods and strategies to address gaps in existing simulation software that could be jointly addressed by the two communities.

How to Propose an Extended Abstract/Presentation

Submit a 3-5 page extended abstract, formatted in the Winter Simulation Conference style (see Author Kit information below).

The proposed extended abstract should clearly identify the role of simulation in a decision-making environment, or the special needs of decision-making that depend upon simulation modeling and analysis for input. To speak in the workshop requires that an extended abstract be submitted and accepted by the program committee into the program.  Participation in the workshop, for those that don’t have formal presentations, is welcome but limited to the capacity of the workshop (up to 60 participants total).

Email proposed extended abstracts to simu09@nus.edu.sg before February 15, 2009.  Acceptance decisions for extended abstracts will be given in March 2009, earlier where possible when extended abstract are submitted earlier.

If you would like to organize a session, please send an email to john.fowler@asu.edu with the title of the session and a list of papers.

Special Issue of the Journal of Simulation Associated with Workshop

A special issue of the Journal of Simulation (JoS) will be dedicated to publishing full papers linked with presentations from the workshop.  Full papers will still pass through the full refereeing process.

Author Kit

Extended abstracts are to be 3-5 pages when formatted in the Winter Simulation Conference (WSC) paper style.  See the Author Kit at http://www.wintersim.org/authkit.htm for further instructions.  The only change from that format, for the purposes of this workshop, is to change the header on the first page from WSC and the names of the editors of that conference, to the following text: Proceedings of the 2009 INFORMS Simulation Society Research Workshop.  For author convenience, the following documents have the requested changes in the headers.  Please see the related documentation at the WSC site (at http://www.wintersim.org/authkit.htm) for further information.

Word Instructions / Sample Paper : Sample09Word.docx

Word Document Template : ISSRW09Template.dotx

LaTeX Instructions / Sample Document (zip file): LaTeX.zip

Copyright Transfer Agreement: CopyrightTransferAgreement.docx

Submit pdf file of extended abstract and copyright transfer agreement to: simu09@nus.edu.sg

Accepted extended abstracts will be published on the INFORMS Simulation Society WWW site (http://www.informs-sim.org/) after the workshop for broader dissemination of the Workshop’s output. The above copyright transfer agreement is required before final acceptance of the paper into the program.
