Biography:
Dr. Vinnie Gupta is currently a professor in the department of mechanical engineering and has taught at RIT since 1981. He holds a B. Tech. in metallurgical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (Kanpur), an MS in metallurgical engineering and materials science from the University of Notre Dame, an MS in computer science from RIT, an MS in mechanical engineering and Ph. D. in materials science from the University of Rochester. Prior to joining RIT, Professor Gupta worked in industrial research and development for three years. At RIT, Professor Gupta teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of Materials Science, Mechanics and Computational Methods. He is also on the faculty of graduate program in materials science and engineering. Dr. Gupta is a recipient of the 2000 Eisenhart Award for Excellence in Teaching. For the last six years, he has been elected to serve as a representative for the College of Engineering in the Academic Senate. He has been a member of the Institute Effective Teaching Committee for the last four years, and has chaired it for the last two years. He manages the Advanced Materials Lab and the Materials Synthesis Lab in the department.

Dr. Gupta is the campus representative (since 1987) for the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE). He is the recipient of several ASEE awards: St. Lawrence Section Outstanding Educator Award, Zone I Outstanding Campus Representative Award. He also received an Honorable Mention in the ASME 1997 Curriculum Innovation Awards.

Dr. Gupta works with area industry on several materials development and characterization projects. Besides teaching, his recent focus has been on enhancing the teaching and learning environment on RIT campus. He is also very interested in involving undergraduate students in multidisciplinary research in materials science and engineering.
