Perkins is part of a team of artists and physicians carrying on the work of the late Frank H. Netter, MD -- probably the best known medical illustrator of the 20th century. He has contributed new illustrations to Netter's Atlas of Human Physiology, Netter's Atlas of Human Neuroscience, Netter's Internal Medicine, and Netter's Atlas of Pharmacology. Perkins received a certificate of merit in the Illustrated Medical Book Category from the Association of Medical Illustrators for his contribution to Netter's Atlas of Human Physiology. He was recently selected as the official illustrator for the American Academy of Neurology for a new series of patient education brochures dealing with topics from stroke to migraine to muscular dystrophy. Perkins has also illustrated three pathology textbooks, two medical terminology texts, several surgical atlases, the world's best-selling medical dictionary (Dorland's), and contributed to dozens of other books. He is a member of the Board of Governors of the Association of Medical Illustrators and the 2002 recipient of their Outstanding Service Award. Perkins earned a bachelor's in biology and geology from Cornell University in 1985, an ABD in vertebrate paleontology and anatomy from the University of Rochester, and an MFA in medical illustration from Rochester Institute of Technology. Perkins is an expert in medical illustration and healthcare communications, particularly in preparing illustrations for print media and the use of medical exhibits in litigation. He also has a research interest in molecular visualization and the creation of highly accurate 3D representations of molecular structures. |
