James Winebrake conducts research to determine the environmental impacts of transportation and energy use in society. He applies quantitative models to assess environmental impacts primarily related to air quality and global climate change.

Winebrake is an expert on energy technology, global warming, environment, transportation and environment, and energy and environmental policy.

At RIT, he is Chair of the Department of STS/Public Policy. Winebrake is also Director of the University-National Park Energy Partnership Program, Director of the Center for Energy Analysis and Policy, and a principal investigator on a number of grants to study the environmental impacts of energy use and transportation.

Winebrake has written and published two books, Alternative Energy Reference Book and Dynamic Modeling of Environmental Systems and numerous articles on transportation, energy, and the environment.

He is currently researching emissions from marine transportation, global climate change reduction policy, alternative fuel vehicles and sustainable transportation and China.

Winebrake earned his B.S. in Physics from Lafayette College, his M.S. in Technology and Policy from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his Ph.D. in Energy Management and Policy from University of Pennsylvania.
