Medical illustration MFA student awarded research grant

Xian Boles, medical illustration MFA student from Midland, Mich., was awarded a Vesalian Research Grant by the Vesalius Trust for Visual Communication in the Health Sciences for her thesis proposal about intraoperative neuromonitoring. This technique monitors the functions of the nervous system during neurosurgery to minimize the risk of damage to nerve structures. Boles developed a series of illustrations and three-dimensional models in collaboration with neurosurgeons at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
