Reception and Tour of RIT Telecommunications Lab Takes Place Oct. 9
New state-of-the-art equipment donated by Frontier Corp. will be used to train future telecomm professionals
RIT will dedicate a state-of-the art telecommunications system donated by Frontier Corp. in a ceremony from 4-5:30 p.m. Oct. 9 in the College of Applied Science and Technology.
Frontier and its vendor partners, Actelis, Adtran, Calix and Cisco, donated the equipment, valued at nearly $100,000, to the college’s electrical, computer and telecommunications engineering technology department.
The equipment was installed in the department’s Telecommunications Systems Laboratory during the past academic year and completed over the summer. It is modeled after a telecommunications central office with a modular switching system and broadband, fiber, mobile and voice-over IP technologies.
The new equipment expands the capabilities in the college’s McGowan Center for Telecommunications Innovation and Collaborative Research. In 2007, the McGowan Foundation donated equipment, documentation and artifacts from the archives of MCI founder William McGowan to provide students with a historical perspective of the telecommunications industry.
“We are very honored and grateful to have the opportunity to partner with a well-respected industry leader like Frontier,” says Fred Walker, dean of the College of Applied Science and Technology. “This generous gift will support the continued success of our students while helping to increase new program development, scholarship productivity and strategic progress.”
RIT President Bill Destler and Ann Burr, chairperson, northeast region, Frontier Corp., will attend the event in the Telecommunications Lab, located in the Engineering Technology Building, second floor.
