Controversial Religious Scholar Visits RIT, May 18

One of the most important and influential radical theologians of the 20th century will visit Rochester Institute of Technology next week.

Thomas Altizer will present his talk, “The Ultimate Darkness of the New America,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 18, in Xerox Auditorium in the James E. Gleason Building. The event is free and open to the public.

Altizer, professor emeritus of religious studies at Stony Brook University, has influenced the fields of theology and religious studies, as well as philosophy and literary studies. The leading exponent of the “death of God” theology on the 1960s, Altizer created a media sensation and defined a major new direction in philosophical theology. His books have sold hundreds of thousands of copies and have been translated into a dozen languages including Dutch, Spanish, Japanese and Russian.
