Clarkson University Captures First Place in Regional Concrete Canoe Competition

A team from Clarkson University earned first place in the Upstate New York Regional Concrete Canoe Competition, hosted by Rochester Institute of Technology, April 28-29.

More than 200 students from a dozen colleges in New York state and Canada participated in the two-day event on the RIT campus and in Mendon Ponds Park. The U.S. Military Academy at West Point finished in second place and Hudson Valley Community College took third place. For earning the top spot, Clarkson advances to the 19th annual National Concrete Canoe Competition, hosted by Oklahoma State University, June 15-17 in Stillwater, Okla.

In specific categories, RIT captured first place in the men’s sprint, women’s sprint and co-ed sprint contests, and third place in the men’s endurance event. The RIT-hosted regional contest was one of 18 preliminary competitions. RIT last hosted regionals in 1997, and RIT finished in first place in regionals in 1997, 1998 and 2002 through 2004.

In a companion contest, also hosted by RIT, SUNY Canton captured first place in a regional steel-bridge design competition and advances to the 15th Annual National Student Steel Bridge Competition, hosted by the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, May 26-27. Ecole De Technologie Superieure, in Montreal, finished in second place and Hudson Valley Community College earned third place.

Both competitions were sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
