RIT Hosts Leading Addiction Expert May 8

Harvard University’s Howard Shaffer to speak about drug, sex and gambling addiction

Howard Shaffer, the director of the Division on Addictions at the Cambridge Health Alliance, a Harvard Medical School affiliate, will speak at Rochester Institute of Technology May 8.

Shaffer’s address, “Drugs, Sex and Gambling: Towards a Syndrome Model of Addiction,” is open to the public and will begin at 3 p.m. in Ingle Auditorium, which is housed in the Student Alumni Union.

Shaffer is one of the nation’s leading experts on several forms of addiction. In recent years, he has served as principal or co-principal investigator on a number of government or foundation sponsored research projects, including the Harvard Project on Gambling and Health and Advancing Science Through Substance Abuse Education.

While on campus, Shaffer will also meet with representatives of the RIT-led Rochester Regional Cyber Safety and Ethics Initiative.

The event is sponsored by RIT’s Bader Grant Task Force, which strives to provide the RIT community with alcohol education and prevention initiatives.
