RIT’s Gallery r Hosts Black & White Exhibition

Meet the artists at opening reception on Friday Oct. 24

Gallery r opens the season with Black & White—a student competition of work created in black and white mediums involving students from the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences at Rochester Institute of Technology. Guest curators for the show are professional artists Karen Sardisco and Nick Ruth.

The exhibition runs from Oct. 23 through Nov. 15, with an opening artist reception scheduled from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24.

Zerbe Sodervick, Gallery r advisor and RIT faculty member says, “It is hard not to appreciate artists who reduce their work to black and white. Color is so seductive but perhaps for that reason it is easy to accept and not question all its’ nuances.

“Black and white work forces us to take a very close look at the artist’s visual selection. We become sensitive to various contrasts, space, expressive mood implied, and often ponder the juxtaposition of all the parts making up the artwork.”

Gallery r, located at 775 Park Ave., is RIT’s metro showcase and learning laboratory for the arts. Regular gallery hours are 2 to 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free and the gallery is handicapped accessible.
