Lessons Learned Launching a Print and Web Publication, Jan. 29

The RIT Department of Communication Colloquium Series presents Mike Johansson

Rochester Institute of Technology’s Department of Communication will host a presentation by Mike Johansson, founding editor and general manager of insider magazine and rochesterinsider.com, at noon on Thursday, Jan. 29, in the B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences auditorium.

Johansson will give a presentation entitled insider and rochesteinsider.com: the Story Behind the Most Successful New Media in Rochester. He will discuss the lessons he has learned launching a print and Web publication from nothing and how to find the right audience for a new publication. The talk is part of the Department of Communication Colloquium Series and is free and open to the public. Sign-language interpreters are provided for the event.

Some of the areas Johansson will cover include why hundreds of real customers are worth more than official marketing research, the five things insider did right and the 10 mistakes to avoid when launching a new product.

Johansson has a doctoral degree in newspaper journalism from Syracuse University’s Newhouse School. He has also won fellowships in newspaper design and newspaper ethics at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla., and in multimedia design and production at the University of California at Berkeley.
