Top computing students from across the Northeast will converge at Rochester Institute of Technology Feb. 27 for the annual Northeast Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition. Six colleges and universities will attempt to complete a series of tasks while defending its network from relentless attacks that are conducted by a group of industry professionals.

The competition is sponsored by Harris RF Communications and M&T Bank.

“Students are going to have the opportunity to test their skills in a very real world situation,” says RIT professor Peter Lutz, one of the event’s organizers. “They’re going to have to deal with demands that may ordinarily come up in a month’s time over just a three day period.”

Northeastern University, Champlain College, Norwich University, University at Buffalo and the University of Maine will join RIT in the competition. RIT narrowly defeated Northeastern in last year’s competition. The winner of this year’s event will advance to the national competition in San Antonio this April.

The event begins at noon on Friday, Feb. 27, in RIT’s B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences. It continues on Saturday, Feb. 28, from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. and on Sunday, March 1, from 9 a.m. until noon. Saturday is the most intense day of the competition, as each team is bombarded with attacks.
