Workshops planned on designing TigerTerm courses

RIT faculty interested in learning more about offering and preparing a TigerTerm^SM course are invited to attend events set for April 18 and 19.

TigerTerm^SM is the name given to the intensive courses that will be offered between fall and spring semesters and during the summer, beginning in January 2014. Some courses may offer credit, others may be designed for helping students gain specific experiences or skills.

“These courses can be anything that we don’t teach during a normal semester,” said Fernando Naveda, RIT’s director of the office of calendar conversion, who is overseeing the change to the semester system. “They are a great opportunity to offer learning experiences to students that may not be offered in the fall or spring semesters, an opportunity for students to participate in study abroad programs, or learn a specific skill they will need for their careers.”

Depending on availability, TigerTerm^SM courses could also help students stay on track with their degree programs or even make up for lost ground.

The events will be led by Jeffrey Noblett, who, as Colorado College’s associate dean of the faculty, has extensive experience in designing and delivering intensive courses.

The events, open to faculty, staff and administrators, are:

· Designing an Intensive Course Series, Part 1: Plenary and Q & A Session
 - 9 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 18, Louise Slaughter Hall (CIMS), room 2210/2220. In this session, Noblett, who has 30 years of experience in teaching intensive courses, will share his knowledge of what works in course format, design and delivery.

· Designing an Intensive Course Series, Part 2: Workshop - 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, April 18, Louise Slaughter Hall (CIMS), room 2230. This interactive workshop is for full-time faculty who want to teach a three-week TigerTerm^SM course in January 2014. Participants will work in small groups to design an innovative, intensive course, focusing on essential course goals and outcomes, successful intensive course activities and assignments, and effective assessment strategies.

· Designing an Intensive Course Series, Part 3: Travel Study Courses – 8:30 to 11 a.m. Friday, April 19, Louise Slaughter Hall, room 2230. This session is specifically intended for faculty and staff who are likely to engage in an intensive travel study program in January 2014. Participants should consider also attending the April 18 course design plenary.
