With its demanding and innovative curriculum that often results in majors spending long hours in the labs throughout all four years at RIT, new media design and imaging graduates in the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences have a reputation for being “workforce ready” upon graduating from the rigorous program.
So it’s no surprise that Jon Brennan, a fourth-year new media design student, is headed to New York City for a job with a cutting-edge design firm soon after he crosses the stage at Gordon Field House.
The Downingtown, Pa., native already has signed a contract as a designer at B-Reel, an innovative design firm that produces stunning digital work for clients like Sony and Volkswagen.
“I first found out about B-Reel through the RIT Creative Industry Day event, which is geared toward new media design majors,” says Brennan, an Outstanding Undergraduate Scholar whose design work has been recognized with ADDY Awards (locally, regionally and nationally) and with Adobe Achievement Awards. “One of our alumni interned at their office a few years ago, and I was really attracted to their work.”
B-Reel was so impressed with Brennan that the firm offered him an internship last year, but he had already decided to give the West Coast a try and interned at Odopod, a San Francisco design firm. When his sister, a designer at another New York City firm, had a chance meeting with someone at B-Reel several months later, she mentioned that her brother was still interested in working there.
“I flew down there for a quick interview right before Christmas and signed my contract in mid-January,” Brennan says.
He believes the new media design courses in motion graphics, 3-D modeling, animation, film, programming, physical computing and more have prepared him well for the opportunity.
And he can’t wait to get started.
“I’m most excited for the energy of the office, to learn from my coworkers and to grow as a designer,” Brennan says. “I’m also excited to be constantly creating things; they’re always coming up with projects to work on in their spare time and after hours.”
