NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft took this crescent view of the Earth’s moon on Sept. 8, 2005.

Stargazers are invited to an open house at the Rochester Institute of Technology Observatory to view the first-quarter moon, the Andromeda Galaxy and the planets Uranus and Neptune.

The free event will be held from 8 to 10 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3, at the RIT Observatory, located at 645 John St. near the intersection of John Street and Bailey Road, and is a timely nod to national Astronomy Day on Oct. 4.

“If the skies are cloudy, we will provide a presentation on two spaceships that have just reached the planet Mars—NASA’s MAVEN mission and India’s MOM mission,” said Michael Richmond, RIT physics professor and observatory director.
