Re-energize with ‘Destination Intersession’

Month-long program highlighted by special workshops, presentations

Tiger Talks Faculty Showcase, an eclectic series of presentations, is the centerpiece of Rochester Institute of Technology’s Destination Intersession 2015.

Destination Intersession, hosted by The Wallace Center, is in its second year and is designed to help faculty renew and re-energize between academic terms. It runs from Jan. 5 to 23 and is free of charge, with registration required. Some courses are also open to graduate students.

Highlights of the program include:

  • Publishing Without Perishing: A one-day symposium in which book publishing experts will work with participants on ways to successfully craft an academic book proposal and manuscript. The program is free, but seating is limited and registration is required.
  • “Power Up” Your Emotional Intelligence, a half-day workshop led by Molly McGowan of RIT’s Leadership Institute. The workshop opens with a lunch. Seating is very limited and registration is required.
  • Tiger Talks Faculty Showcase, in which participants can choose from a variety of half-hour interactive faculty-led presentations with such titles as “Take Me To The River: Rowing, Racing, Middle Age, Love, Friendship and Rock & Roll,” “Turning Evil Into Good” and “Thinking about Thinking: Metacognition and Modern Teaching.” The daylong program on Jan. 14 includes continental breakfast and lunch.

Workshops will be offered daily during the program, on such topics as incorporating technology into the classroom, online course design, grant writing, navigating departmental politics and teaching effectively to students who are deaf or hard of hearing. A full course schedule for Destination Intersession is available online.

“We’ve made sure to include opportunities for faculty to get acquainted and share ideas,” said Lynn Wild, associate provost for Faculty Career Development and The Wallace Center. “We’re collaborating with partners across the university to provide these professional development opportunities that will enrich and kindle a new spirit for the coming year, and reward our faculty for the wonderful work they do each and every day.”
