Student group hosts ‘What We Do’ exhibition

14th Annual ‘What We Do’ Exhibition set for Booksmart Studio in Rochester

RIT’s National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) chapter is hosting the opening reception of its 14th annual “What We Do” exhibit at 7 p.m. Friday, May 1, at Booksmart Studio, 250 N. Goodman St. No. 1 in downtown Rochester. The exhibit runs through May 24.

This year’s lectures and judging are to be performed by RIT photojournalism alumni Karen Cetinkaya (The New York Times); Leila Navidi (Minneapolis Star Tribune); and Seth Gitner (Syracuse University), who have selected 24 awards across nine categories from the work of 56 entrants from RIT’s photojournalism department.

The reception will feature presentation of awards and the opening of the gallery exhibition. The top prizes for best portfolios include a Nikon D610 camera body and 28mm lens provided by Nikon Professional Services along with the $1,300 Gitner Family Scholarship.

The RIT NPPA chapter was started in 2001 by RIT photojournalism students and with the help of Loret Steinberg, associate professor in the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences and RIT NPPA adviser. The “What We Do” competition annually celebrates the outstanding work by RIT’s nationally recognized photojournalism program.

The RIT NPPA is a student-run organization aimed toward building a network among the photojournalism students at RIT and carrying those out into the working world.
