Celebration of life on Friday for Stan McKenzie

A celebration of life is planned Friday for Provost Emeritus Stan McKenzie, a beloved member of the Rochester Institute of Technology family and former senior vice president of Academic Affairs.

McKenzie, who died Nov. 8, served RIT for 41 years in several capacities, including teaching literature for 34 years and serving as provost for 14 years. He served as director of judicial affairs and acting dean of the College of Liberal Arts.

The memorial will begin at 4 p.m. in RIT’s Allen Chapel in the Kilian J. and Caroline F. Schmitt Interfaith Center, followed by a reception in the Fireside Lounge.

The service will be moderated by Mary Sullivan, former dean of the College of Liberal Arts. Speakers include RIT President Bill Destler, former RIT President Al Simone, former students, colleagues, and McKenzie’s nephew, Barry Hagan.

Destler called McKenzie an RIT icon.

“As an administrator, he played a major role in the advancement of the university into the ranks of the nation’s largest and finest private universities,” he said. “As an educator, he had the innate ability to impart his zest for learning to his students. He was a beloved member of the RIT family and will be truly missed.”

The RIT flag will be lowered to half-staff Friday in his memory.
