Streams of lava raced through the city of Goma toward Lake Kivu following the eruption of Nyiragongo in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Jan. 17, 2002. Scientists were relieved when the lava poured into the lake without disturbing the volatile gas. The visualization combines a Landsat satellite image and an elevation model from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission.
