RIT in the news: Saunders College of Business News hits

In a community weary of news about brazen violence, there is an opportunity to take comfort in the community-building activities taking part at RIT.

On the same day that the mayor of Rochester, Robert Duffy, expressed outrage over the “plague” of violence (8 homicides in 8 days) that has shocked us all, smiles overtook our campus with the introduction of the E. Philip Saunders College of Business. The announcement was made possible by a $13 million gift from entrepreneur Philip Saunders, which will not only enhance business education at RIT but will also make it more accessible to the next generation of entrepreneurs.

News coverage of the announcement helped balance the bad news that dominiated the headlines on this day. Some of the reporters I talked to expressed how pleased they were to be assigned the RIT story. Even they are weary with the drum beat of violence that most of us are at a loss to understand.

I’m not suggesting we turn a deaf ear to the problems affecting our community. It’s important that we stay informed and become active participants in the search for solutions. But I am suggesting we celebrate the good news. What’s happening at RIT is much more representative of the community that we care about and call home.

Paul—I concur. The atmosphere at the press conference was something special. Even the generally stone-faced reporters had smiles on their faces. Everyone in attendance could tell that it wasn't just a good day for RIT, but a good day for the Rochester community. And who wouldn't agree that Rochester needs every good day it can muster?

I hear this gift also bumped us over the $300 mil goal for the campaign.  That's pretty cool.
