A couple weeks ago, a team of researchers from RIT’s Center for Integrated Manufacturing Studies was invited to attend a major conference in the Dominican Republic. The event was sponsored by the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra of Santo Domingo and focused on the current state of the Dominican economy, particularly the manufacturing sector. The CIMS representatives offered insight on opportunities for enhanced collaboration between academic institutions and industry as well as information related to sustainable process implementation and pollution prevention.

The conference was a major event and was covered by local and national media who prominently featured RIT. When I first learned of this, I could not wait to see the press and was looking forward to promoting the good publicity. However, one key fact had escaped me: since the Dominican Republic is a Spanish-speaking country, all of the articles were, of course, in Spanish!

While my high school Spanish teacher would not be happy to hear this, needless to say, I am not fluent and neither is anyone else at CIMS. So, I spent the next several days trying to figure out what the stories said and see if there was any way we could use the articles given that most of the RIT community could not read them.

We did ultimately get several very kind offers of assistance from some of RIT’s Spanish-speaking members who helped us decipher the pieces. One of my CIMS colleagues, Laura Nelson, also got the brilliant idea of showcasing all of CIMS’ foreign press in an international display case, featuring the titles and experts from a number of articles. That way we can show off the good publicity without having to worry about everyone being able to understand every story.

This just goes to show that all press is good press even when you cannot understand it!

Oh one more thing, for those of you who were wondering, Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra translates to Pontifical Catholic University Mother and Teacher.
