Imagine 2008 Events

Ah, the holiday season! It’s a time of reflection and anticipation. Certainly, many of us here at RIT look back on this past year for its many milestones—the announcement of a new campus in Dubai, the formation of The Golisano Institute for Sustainability and, of course, the inauguration of President Bill Destler.

Now, as we get ready for 2008, a great deal of attention shifts toward planning for the university’s first-ever innovation and creativity festival. Imagine RIT, which will take place on campus May 3, is intended as a showcase for the remarkable achievements of students, faculty and staff. Already more than 100 groups and individuals have submitted proposals for the festival.

Despite this great start, there’s still a lot of work to be done in the next four and a half months to prepare for Imagine RIT. Last Wednesday, President Destler hosted the second of two information sessions to help acquaint the campus community with this major event. The “buy in” of nearly everyone on campus will be critical to the festival’s ultimate success.

Keeping the community at large informed is also important. With the goal of bringing 30,000 people to campus that day, organizers hopes to draw in alumni and other friends of RIT from across the region. Members of the Imagine RIT communication committee are working hard to formalize a strategy that will generate a great deal of advance publicity. One tactic that’s already underway involves a student poster contest. And, as we get closer to spring, look for the start to an all-out advertising blitz.

Imagine RIT offers great potential in helping transform our brand into the “innovation university,” so mark your calendar for May 3. It will be worth the wait.
