Watch out for winter University Magazine

At this very point in time, the winter 07-08 issue of The University Magazine is arriving in 104,000 mailboxes all over the world.

On the cover is Bill Destler, who is the university’s ninth president, or “Top Cat,” as he has been dubbed by David Page ’66. Page, retired photographer for Duke University, represented his longtime employer at Destler’s inauguration Nov. 9. He wore appropriate academic regalia and tiger-striped sox to the event.

Our Top Cat features prominently in this issue of the magazine. We think it is important for alumni, parents, and other members of the RIT family to get to know the man who is leading RIT into the next phase of its life, as the university strives to earn increased recognition as the nation’s first “Innovation University.”

It’s unlikely that President Destler will get this much exposure in the magazine for many years to come—not until he leaves the seventh floor office and we celebrate the university’s accomplishments under his administration.

In the meantime, the magazine will tell the stories of many other people—students, faculty, alumni, others—who make RIT such a marvelous entity.

I’ll mention just a few examples from the new issue: three alumni who are preparing to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro to fight cancer; an alumnus entrepreneur who has joined forces with RIT faculty and students to launch a business aimed at easing the world’s energy crisis; two students who explored career opportunities at the FBI; an RIT grad who, as an Air Force general, serves at the Pentagon as vice director for intelligence on the Joint Staff.

For these stories and so much more, check out the online version of RIT: The University Magazine. Or, if you’d like to receive a copy of the printed magazine, drop me an e-mail.
