Wide World of Tiger Sports – April 16 Sports

Get out the golf clubs, start up the weed wacker, and fire up the grill. Spring looks to finally be here in Western New York, with the Tiger Spring Sports entering its home stretch.

We have a new women’s basketball coach. Amy Reed, formerly of Gettysburg College is the choice.

The men’s lacrosse program(7-6, 4-2 Empire 8), on a two-game winning streak, essentially begins its postseason today against Utica. On Saturday, the Tigers head to Nazareth for the game of the year. Winner makes the postseason, loser goes home. For both RIT and Nazareth, perennial Division III powers throughout the last three decades, a season ending on April 19, is far from normal.

Softball (13-13, 4-4 Empire 8), fresh off the offensive explosion at Skidmore on Sunday, and sweep at Medaille on Monday, faces a play-off like weekend of their own with doubleheaders against Nazareth (and former RIT head coach Jack Carpenter) on Saturday (senior day) and at Alfred on Sunday. All three teams are fighting for two playoff spots in the crowded Empire 8 standings. Emily McPherson was the RIT Female Athlete of the Week.

Baseball (6-10) has a busy week ahead, with a single game against Brockport on Wednesday, a doubleheader against SUNY Oneonta on Thursday and doubleheaders against Empire 8 foe Utica on Saturday and Sunday.

Women’s lacrosse
(5-5, 3-4 Empire 8) is on the outside looking in after a conference loss to Ithaca on Saturday. The Tigers almost made a surreal comeback in that game, but fell short. The women rebounded with a win at Elmira on Sunday. RIT wraps up conference play on Saturday at Stevens.

Men’s Tennis
(5-4, 3-3 Empire 8) is riding a three-match winning streak and with a win over Hartwick on Saturday, clinch the fourth and final berth in the Empire 8 Championship will be hosted by RIT on April 26-27. Jose Guzman was the RIT Male Athlete of the Week.

Outdoor track and field had some good performances on both the men’s and women’s sides at the Division I Bucknell Bison Classic on Friday and Saturday. The Tigers are at Ithaca on Saturday for the Empire 8 Championships.
