Wide World of Tiger Sports – October 8 Sports

After nearly seven months, the wait is over for the RIT men’s hockey team, as the squad begins its fourth season of Division I play this weekend at Bowling Green and Western Michigan. Live stats will be available for both contests. Vote for the new poll on our website asking how the Tigers will do this weekend.

The Orange and White scrimmage and Skate With the Tigers was a rousing success, as $1,900 was raised to benefit a great cause in Hockey Coaches Care.

The men’s soccer team (4-7-0, 2-1-0 E8) split a pair of conference contests over the weekend, blanking Elmira, 3-0 on Saturday, and losing to Ithaca, 2-1 on Sunday. Dan Holowaty was the RIT Male Athlete of the Week.

Women’s Soccer (5-4-2, 2-1-1 E8) is off this weekend after losing to #7 William Smith on Tuesday. The Tigers also played Utica to a hard-fought draw on Saturday. Freshman Ashley Valenti was named the Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week for the second time on Monday.

RIT’s women’s tennis squad (7-3, 7-1 E8) is the #2 seed in the 2008 Empire 8 Tournament this weekend at Stevens. The Tigers will play #3 Nazareth on Saturday, while #1 Ithaca will play host Stevens, the four seed. The two winners meet in the championship match on Sunday.

Volleyball (13-14, 2-2 E8) finished 3-1 at the Nazareth Invitational last weekend, with Vic Petko and Nichole Boxler earning All-Tournament team honors. Last night, RIT easily dispatched SUNY Geneseo. This weekend, the Tigers compete against some stiff competition at the NYU Invitational. Heidi Little was the RIT Female Athlete of the Week, while Laura Mooney garnered Empire 8 Rookie of the Week honors.

The women’s cross country squad recorded a solid fourth place finish at the Geneseo Invitational on Saturday. Head Coach Dave Stevens believes that his squad is rounding nicely into form and should really hit its top stride in the next few weeks. Both the men and women are off until October 18, when they compete at the SUNY Albany Invitational.
