Eight days ’til Athenaeum Inside N&E

Eight days ’til what?

If you haven’t heard the buzz on campus lately, University News will debut a new publication on Aug. 27 that will replace the print version of our old standard, News & Events. It’s important for our readers to note, however, that University News will continue to produce its daily edition, News & Events Daily, which brings the top stories of the day to the RIT community. Our newest print venture, Athenaeum, will be produced six times a year and will give our writers the chance to present a new style of writing—in-depth storytelling.

So, why did we select the name Athenaeum? Here’s a bit of a history lesson. We went back to RIT’s roots with Athenaeum, the forerunner of RIT dating back to 1829. Col. Nathaniel Rochester and other Rochester community leaders founded the Athenaeum, an association “for the purpose of cultivating and promoting literature, science and the arts.” Later in the 19th century, the Athenaeum merged with Mechanics Institute, a school that provided technical training for skilled workers in industry. The name Rochester Institute of Technology was adopted in 1944.

The name “Athenaeum” wholeheartedly describes the tone and mission of our new publication; it is used in the names of institutions or periodicals for literary, scientific or artistic study. It’s all very ‘left-brain, right-brain,’ don’t you think?

We’ve all worked very hard to bring you this high-quality publication, and I’m so excited for its debut on Aug. 27. And while we are encouraging you to embrace Athenaeum, we hope you will continue to read our ‘sister publication’, News & Events Daily, for all the RIT news happening between our Athenaeum editions.
