RIT 360: You can make it happen Campus life, News hits

For all the time I spend visiting Southern California, even having lived there briefly, I’ve never visited the campus of San Diego State University. But now I feel like I have, thanks to Google technology. Visitors to Google’s Street View Gallery can practically ‘walk’ the SDSU campus with the help of a laptop. Check it out!

Now, imagine that kind of virtual tour of the RIT campus. You have the power to make it a reality!

google-logo-smallGoogle has announced that RIT is among five finalists to become the next university featured in its Street View Gallery, part of the Google Maps application. The company’s recent request for nominations generated 25,000 responses. Among the various landmarks and attractions, 44 percent of the recommendations were for college and university campuses—and apparently RIT received its share.

googlestreetbike-smallIf selected, Google will send a specially designed tricycle to campus that tows nine directional cameras mounted overhead. It also includes a GPS unit for positioning and laser range scanners. The “Trike,” as it’s called, would cruise around campus snapping photographs, providing a continuous stream of 360-degree street-level images.

How cool would it be to incorporate a demonstration of this during Imagine RIT: Innovation and Creativity Festival on May 1? That’s just me talking. I have no idea if it’s feasible.

Anyway, RIT has some high-profile competition. The other nominees are Arizona State University, Michigan State University, Stanford University and Princeton University. Not bad company to keep, don’t you think?

University News is busy spreading the word. On Wednesday we put out a news release and then encouraged our media friends to spread the word. WROC-TV (Channel 8) ran the story during its 5 o’clock newscast and so did 13WHAM-TV. The Democrat and Chronicle is preparing a story to appear around Thanksgiving.

Help bring the Trike to Rochester. Visit www.google.com/trike to choose RIT as Google’s next Street View university. Vote now and vote often! And encourage your friends and family to do the same. Voting continues through Nov. 30.
