Men’s soccer to enjoy once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with trip to Spain Sports

This Wednesday, members of the RIT men’s soccer team will head to Spain to train and compete against some of the top collegiate and club teams in the country. Twenty-six players, two coaches and an athletic trainer will represent the Tigers, who return to Rochester on Aug. 12.

The players, who raised money through several different fundraisers and came up with some of their own money to fund this trip, are extremely excited to participate in this once in a lifetime journey. Less than a month ago, Spain was the talk of the sporting world after winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Now, the Tigers will train with FC Barcelona, RCD Espanyol and the University of Barcelona, then compete against CE Europa, CE Manera and St. Andreu in a series of friendly matches, which will help prepare RIT for its 2010 season, which begins Sept. 1.

The Tigers leave Rochester on Wednesday, and arrive in Madrid, Spain, on Thursday. From there, they will fly into Barcelona, where they will spend the bulk of their trip, training and exploring the internationally renowned city. There is a five-hour time difference between Barcelona and Rochester. The men will fly back on Aug. 12. It looks like about a seven hour plane ride from Madrid to JFK in New York City.

Check back often to www.ritathletics.com during the week, as seniors David Vogt and Bret Dietz, head coach Bill Garno and others will blog about their time in the country.  There will be also video and photos from the trip.

Good luck guys. Bring me back some Barcelona turf in your cleats to mingle with our field! Soak up that nice combination passing game they showed us in the WC. I wish I was with you. Looking forward to the blogs and pictures!
