Being part of the RIT family for over seven years doesn’t seem like it has been that many. Sure, for several members of the RIT family seven years might seem more like a morning commute in their RIT career. For me, I sure hope I can say the same thing many years from now.

Some of you might know me, others—or most likely 90 percent of the RIT family—may not. My name is Pete Bella and I am the senior graphic designer with University Publications. I work closely with the outstanding staff at University News and assist them on numerous projects.

I have worked with the team on many projects that many of you interact with every day. Works such as the University News website, the RIT homepage, The Tiger Beat Blog, Athenaeum and RIT Athletics materials, such as the schedule poster, to name a few. One of my proudest creations, and of course the closest to my heart, is the RIT Athletics Tiger logo.

I’m sure you’d love to know the story behind the title Shooting Tigers. A recent project that I was assigned to was a piece that morphed from one print piece to a complete other. The idea behind the project was to create a buzz in the Greater Rochester community about the RIT Tigers Men’s Ice Hockey game versus UMass Lowell on Oct. 16 at Blue Cross Arena.

The game was also a part of the RIT Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend (whew, try saying that with a mouth full of chips!). In the past the Tigers have managed to have a marginal crowd attend the annual homecoming game without too much concern. With the success of the Tigers and their visit to the Frozen Four in the 2009-2010 season there were high hopes of a new attendance record. Personally, I repeatedly mentioned to everyone on the project, “This needs to be so huge that it is the vehicle which draws a SELL-OUT crowd!”

We create a knock-out punch of a poster to promote the game. It was reminiscent of a ‘Ali vs Frazier fight’ meets ‘Hollywood movie’ poster.

Well, it was a sell-out crowd. Was it due to the poster our creative team created and handed out everywhere possible, or was it the RIT Tigers and their success. I’m sure you can draw your own conclusion. But for me, a small part holds close to the successes of the poster…and the hockey team isn’t so bad either.

I have shared some behind the scences photos on the Shooting Tigers story at my professional website, along with some of the antics that we endured while on the photo shoot. Even though I have just released my professional website to the world and the content is still being populated, I really wanted to share the other aspect of this unique story and a great group of young men that lead the Tigers this 2010-2011 season. Reflecting back to our lengthy careers at RIT, we only get a brief four years with the young men and women who choose RIT to be their family, their education and their future. I cherish every moment I can interact with them and help excel them to the top.

Great Article! I just wanted to tell you that I LOVED that poster so much that once Brick City had passed I kept one and plan to frame it for my office.

Molly, that’s awesome and thanks so much for sharing. I think the poster will be commemorative thanks to the packed BCA and those awesome trophies the captains are flaunting. Funny thing, the captains wouldn’t comment on the trophies’ journeys in the off season.

I just enjoyed breakfast at Margie's on West Henrietta Rd, just a few miles off campus. Even though the season has ended, by almost two weeks now, they are still proudly sporting their commemorative poster as it is hanging in the front entrance. Margie's, besides having an awesome breakfast, is a favored dinning choice for the RIT Women's Ice Hockey team as well as the men's team. Usually, on the mornings of game days, you can find a core group of Women Tigers sharing laughs and a pre-game meal.
