Slow and steady Athenaeum

It’s week three in my wellness quest, and I generally have positive thoughts about my journey so far. My cover story for the April 14 issue of Athenaeum has been written and, needless to say, this has been the most hands-on research I’ve done for an article in a while.

Here’s the great part: I absolutely love the Turbo Kick fitness class that I’m taking twice a week on campus. In fact, I love it so much that I bought a used Turbo Kick DVD from Amazon.com so I can exercise at home. I’m managing the workouts pretty well, which was a big concern for me. Don’t get me wrong, I am totally wiped out afterwards, but I’m pumped at the same time. I have a sense of accomplishment after I complete the 50-minute hard-core aerobic workout. And the fact that I’m burning between 700 and 1,000 calories per session is gratifying.

Here’s the good part: I’ve lost three pounds in three weeks, which everyone tells me is pretty good. So, only seven more pounds to go to reach my goal.

Here’s the not-so-good part: I have worked REALLY hard over these past three weeks—and I’ve ONLY lost THREE pounds! Not only have I really stepped up my workout routine, but I’m keeping a close eye on my meal portions along with what I’m eating. I’ve had a few moments of weakness (the small McCafé strawberry shake on Tuesday), but I’ve turned my back on a lot of other treats that I wouldn’t have thought twice about eating before I made this commitment.

So, would I advise someone to register for a wellness class? Absolutely. I feel pretty good. And I’m happy that I’m doing something physical—plenty of advantages there.

Stay tuned to see how I fare over the next few weeks, and if I come any closer to my weight-loss goal. And by my next post, I’m going to try to take advantage of another benefit of RIT’s Better Me wellness program—a chair massage. Sounds intense.

Good for you! Keep up the good work! You'd be a big inspiration for me if I wasn't so lazy :)

You do inspire me, too. I think we can now designate you as the official "I need this delivered across campus" runner with your newly found energy. How soon before you're available for the first trip?

In all true seriousness, I know RIT has one of the FINEST facilities and programs in the Rochester area for wellness. To make the experience even better, have a friend join you. Everyone should give it a try, and if you can just do it now and again, that's fine too — you'll be amazed at how wonderful it can make you feel.

Love having you in my class Vienna!

And, it's not just about the pounds lost, but the inches lost, the decrease in body fat and your energy level now. Your new lifestyle will eventually become your way of life forever!

Let's test your body fat before class on Tuesday and then see what it is by June so that you have more than a weight measurement to measure your success.

    See you in TurboKick!
