A trip to the Balkans PR musings, RIT worldwide

Bill Nye was a hit as the 2012 commencement speaker, but graduation season isn’t over yet at RIT.

RIT leaders are now en route to our campuses in Kosovo and Croatia. President Bill Destler and others travel every year to the Balkan region for graduation ceremonies at the American University in Kosovo (http://www.aukonline.org/), located in the capital city of Pristina, and the American College of Management and Technology in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

But this year is different. About a dozen members of the Board of Trustees will be traveling with the RIT team to get a better understanding of RIT’s global presence and discuss the future of the university’s global programs. RIT started up ACMT in the late 1990s and opened American University in Kosovo in 2002.

The trip is broken into three parts: 1) Some will travel to Kosovo where they will participate in graduation ceremonies as well as visit the Kosovo Innovation Lab, sponsored by UNICEF. 2) Others will travel to the Croatian capital city of Zagreb, where RIT opened a campus last year. 3) Everyone in the travel party will converge to meet at Dubrovnik later in the week for ACMT graduation ceremonies, as well as meet on strategic issues related to RIT’s global plan.

Throughout the trip we are expected to hear about success stories from students at American University in Kosovo and ACMT. Ravaged by war for centuries, this corner of the world is now at peace and working hard toward prosperity. RIT is helping along the way.

But we have much to learn, too. And we will also hear the experiences of RIT students who are currently studying abroad in the Balkan region.

I invite you to follow along on the trip as I blog from the Balkans throughout the week.

Next up: Learning the landscape of the Balkan region, the former Yugoslavia, from a friend at Crossroads Market.
