As we round out the academic year, our staff is pleased to showcase the May-June edition of Athenaeum. Since we feature stories that cover all areas of the university, I am careful not to label this issue as the “Commencement edition.” However, it is true that our staff annually selects a cover story related to this celebratory time on campus.
In 2011, Paul Stella profiled the men and women of Facilities Management Services who work diligently to make our campus functional and beautiful, with the culmination of their duties undoubtedly showcased at key times of the academic year including Brick City Homecoming, Imagine RIT: Innovation and Creativity Festival and, of course, Commencement weekend.
This year, Michael Saffran writes our cover story and focuses on our international students. Imagine traveling thousands of miles away from home—alone, in many instances—with the hope of attaining a top-notch education, the confidence to adapt to a new culture and climate and the discipline to earn a degree leading to a better life? Many of you reading this have done just that. Our international students arrive on campus bringing with them their cuisine, customs and culture—and are ready and willing to share them with their American counterparts. When they leave RIT, they have not only earned their degree, but have stories to tell their families of their unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime experiences learning and living in Henrietta.
Our feature story tells the tale of Nicole Mallory and Rachel Zoyhofsky—two amazing RIT student-athletes who have the chance to complete in the Olympic Games. Rachel is attempting to make the U.S. track and field team headed to London in July, while Nicole sets her sights on Rio in 2016.
And, meet Adena Thomson, an MBA accounting major from the E. Philip Saunders College of Business, who has managed to maintain a 4.0 GPA despite estrangement from her family and a lifetime of instability.
Read these stories and more in the May 24 edition of Athenaeum. And look for the next issue of Athenaeum to hit stands Aug. 23.
Congratulations to RIT’s Class of 2012!
