Welcome back to another season of Athenaeum Athenaeum, Uncategorized

The start of another academic year is upon us and with that comes a new season of RIT’s newsletter, Athenaeum.

This issue has turned out to be one of my personal favorites. The cover is sure to “blow” you away. (Ha) And turning inside, you’re sure to enjoy great features about the 100th anniversary of RIT’s cooperative education program, a Viewpoints essay on the Frans Wildenhain exhibit which opened Aug. 20, and a “feel good” story about RIT’s University/Community Partnerships program, spearheaded by the College of Liberal Arts.

To accompany the story about the partnership program, I produced a short video about the Field to Table Project, a resident-led initiative that promotes health, life skills and community investment within Rochester’s Marketview Heights neighborhood. I was impressed by the passion of the program’s summer coordinator, RIT alumnus Cameron Hebda ’12 (public policy/political science) and his desire to educate our city’s youngsters about the benefits of healthy eating, cooking and gardening.

I wasn’t at all surprised to witness the kids’ enthusiasm as they picked their produce from their garden. It’s the beginning of a great relationship between these kids and healthy eating habits. You can watch the video here: http://bit.ly/PDaj6n

(Can you tell that I really love this story?)

Some other highlights of this issue include a faculty profile on physicist Brian Koberlein and his science-education television show for middle-school students; a spotlight on our newest Student Government leader Taylor Deer; and of course, our cover story—a look at the First Niagara Rochester Fringe Festival, running locally Sept. 19-23.  RIT students and faculty will play a prominent role in the festival, so mark your calendars.

From all of us at University News, welcome back—and happy reading!
