‘Athenaeum’ honors RIT’s great grads Athenaeum

Athenaeum coverThe summer edition of Athenaeum is now available throughout campus and online.

With the end of another academic year, Athenaeum celebrates RIT’s graduates and gives a special ‘shout out’ to the first class of Rochester City Scholars that will cross the commencement stage this weekend. These students, formerly from the Rochester City School District, have set the pace for other top performers from the district and have demonstrated that college is attainable. Our cover story tells the stories of four of these scholars, and includes a link to more scholar profiles featured in RIT: The University Magazine. A video about RIT’s Rochester City Scholars program can be seen here.

Further celebrating the close of the academic year is an up close and personal look at this year’s outstanding teaching honorees and what drives them to be their best selves in the classroom.

Have you ever wondered if the work you’re dedicated to is really worth the hassle? Wilson De Lima Silva has similar moments of deep reflection—often occurring as he floats down the eerie, snake-infested rivers and streams of the Amazon basin in a three-person canoe. Silva, a linguist and lecturer in the College of Liberal Arts, explains his life-changing work in this issue’s feature story, and why his connection to a dying culture and language helps him see beyond his doubts and fears.

Other stories include a look at one student’s “puzzling” creation, how two 2014 College of Imaging Arts and Sciences students will take a bite out of the big “Apple” after graduation, and how one RIT scientist is using math and imaging to help doctors diagnose cancerous tumors.

Looking ahead, our next issue debuts Aug. 14. Until then, enjoy the vibrancy of summer of RIT, and see you in the fall.
