Quilt artist honored

Michael James ’73

Michael James ’73 (master of fine arts, painting and printmaking) has been named the Ardis James professor of textiles, clothing and design at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The professorship was established with a gift from Robert and Ardis James of Chappaqua, N.Y. Michael James, who is not related to Robert and Ardis James, is a senior lecturer in the department of textiles, clothing and design.

He has received a number of awards and fellowships including National Endowment for the Arts visual artist fellowships in 1978 and 1988 and a USA/France exchange fellowship from NEA in 1990.

He earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in painting from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, which gave him an honorary doctor of fine arts degree in 1992. Recently named a fellow of the American Craft Council, James’ work is included in numerous collections. His quilt titled “Rhythm/Color: Spanish Dance” was cited in Art & Antiques Magazine (March 2000) as one of the “Top Treasures of the Century.”
