Secondary Educational Enrichment for Deaf Students – International: Sowing the SEEDS of Cross-Cultural Understanding (SEEDS-International) is the first-of-a-kind pilot program that provides global learning opportunities and cultural awareness for deaf high school students, a historically under-served population. Delegations of students, faculty, and sign language interpreters from both schools participate in videoconferences, local cultural classes, journaling, week-long reciprocal school visits, and capstone presentations about their experiences to assemblies at their home schools.

During the reciprocal visits, the delegations stay with host families and participate in tours, classroom observations, presentations, and educational field trips. Specific topics addressed will include deaf culture and language and the education of students who are deaf. Students record their experiences via written, photo or video journals and post them online. Materials utilized in the videoconferences are made available in both English and Japanese and archived on a dedicated website, available for public viewing and downloading.

After the completion of this one-year pilot, James DeCaro, Professor and Dean Emeritus of NTID, and Nora B. Shannon, Associate Professor and project leader, envision expanding it to other schools for the deaf in both the US and Japan. The curriculum and materials developed for the current project will be utilized in future cultural enrichment programs.

The project began on September 1, 2010, and ends on August 31, 2011.

Secondary Educational Enrichment for Deaf Students – International: Sowing the SEEDS of Cross-Cultural Understanding (SEEDS-International) は、歴史的に十分なサービスが受けられていないろう高校生に、世界的な学習の機会と文化認識を提供する、これまでに類を見ない試験的プログラムです。双方の学校から生徒、教員、そして手話通訳者からなる代表団が、テレビ会議、地元での文化クラス、日記、一週間ずつのお互いの学校訪問、それぞれの学校の集会でのプログラム経験の業績プレゼンテーションに参加します。

お互いの学校訪問では、代表団はホストファミリー宅に滞在し、旅行、授業参観、プレゼンテーション、教育的フィールドトリップに参加します。具体的に取り組む課題には、ろう文化と言語、ろう生徒の教育などが含まれます。生徒たちは文章、写真、ビデオ日記などで経験を記録し、オンラインで掲示します。テレビ会議で用いられた資料は英語、日本語の両方で掲示され、専用のウェブサイトに保管されて一般の閲覧、ダウンロードが可能になっています。

一年に渡る試験プログラムの終了後、NTID教授/名誉学部長のJames DeCaro、准教授/プロジェクトリーダーのNora B. Shannonは、米国、日本両国の他のろう学校への拡大を構想しています。現在のプロジェクトのために開発されたカリキュラムや資料は将来の文化拡充プログラムに活用されます。

プロジェクトは2010年の9月に始まり、2011年8月31日に終了します。
