Evaluate TelePresence Technologies for Face-to-Face and Remote Communication for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Learners
TelePresence technologies clearly are sophisticated videoconferencing solutions that can benefit deaf and hard-of-hearing persons. Unfortunately most the examples that involve deaf and hard-of-hearing persons are those typical at small business meetings, where professionals conduct remote conversations and presentations in typical business meeting structure. This investigation will utilize current and existing Cisco TelePresence systems within a controlled laboratory setting where different communication situations could be enhanced with the TelePresence technology. This will include remote and local situations.
By educating key groups of stakeholders in the use of such technologies, it is hoped that new and imaginative uses and adoptions will be identified and eventually incorporated into future products.
Of particular interest to the NTID CAT is the use of TelePresence technologies in classrooms where both teacher and students are deaf and depend upon sign language during the course of instruction.
- This work depends upon at least two systems being available for assessment
- Technical assessment will be conducted to determine if TelePrescense systems are capable of displaying different channels of information and other features that would be useful for deaf and hard-of-hearing users
- Utility assessment in both remote and local situations
- User reaction to different scenarios of TelePresence
