Description and Goals

 

Attend the five-day Basic Workplace Correspondence workshop on June 7-11, 2010 at cost of $500, at RIT/NTID in Rochester, NY. The workshop will be held daily from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM.

 

This Workshop offers practice in analyzing workplace writing situations and then creating appropriate and effective email, memos, and letters, as well as producing job-search correspondence, such as resumes, application letters, and follow-up letters. Included in this workshop is a focus on using pre-writing strategies, drafting, revision, and editing/proofreading strategies.

  • The Process of Creating Written Communication in the Workplace; The Use of E-mail

  • Characteristics of Effective Workplace Writing

  • Writing Effective Memorandum (Memos)

  • External Correspondence- The Business Letter

  • Job Search Correspondence- Preparing the Resume

  • Job Search Correspondence--Preparing the Application and Follow-Up Letter

  • Practical Strategies for Proofreading/Editing Writing in the Workplace


Prerequisites


Participants must possess, at minimum, paragraph-level fluency and clarity, as demonstrated by successful completion of a college-level (equivalent 101) writing course. Participants must be deaf /hard-of-hearing adults who are either already in the workforce, or are considering re-entry into the world of work

Instructor: Rose Marie Toscano

Rose Marie Toscano is Professor of Language and Literature at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf. Ms Toscano’s disciplinary background is in linguistics and ESL. She has been teaching deaf college students for over 25 years and writes and presents regularly on the teaching of writing and literature to non-traditional students.
