Workshop Description and Goals

 

Attend the 5-day PC Assembly, Maintenance, and Repair workshop July 13-17, 2008 at a cost of $500, at NTID/RIT in Rochester, NY. The workshop will be held daily from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM.

 

This hands-on workshop is designed to give participants the skills needed to assemble, maintain, upgrade, and repair a Windows-based personal computer (PC) and keep it running in top condition. Students will learn the basics of the inner working of the PC hardware aspects as well as how the Windows operating system interacts with the personal computer. Students will also learn to repair and maintain laser printer, set up small wired and wireless networking and fixing Windows operating system.


 

Topics

  • Basic functioning of a microcomputer

  • Assembling, configuring and installing PC components

  • Adding devices and memory to an existing system

  • Troubleshooting PC failures

  • Troubleshooting and maintenance for laser printers

  • Installing and securing small wired and wireless networking

  • Fixing Windows XP operating system such as:

    • Repairing boot up problems

    • Fixing hardware and application errors

    • Resurrecting the dead PC

    • Securing the PC, removing malicious software and XP pest control

    • Backups

Prerequisites

 

Workshop participants must be familiar with personal computers and working with Windows XP.
