A. Research on Teaching

Most of the studies I am conducting at this time related to teaching are focused on sign selection and production and their relationship to the construction of knowledge by deaf students:

Sign Selection in Science and Mathematics: Relationships to Knowledge Construction

This study will examine the effects of sign selection on perceptions deaf students hold about certain concepts in science and mathematics

The Development of an Online Lexical Database of Technical Science Signs

B. Research in Deaf Studies

  1. Currently, I am working on a book examining the deaf experience in the Civil War. I am searching for anecdotes and reports on how deaf people lived during this period of our history, deaf soldiers, deafened soldiers, deaf slaves, and how schools were used as hospitals, etc, during the War.
  • I am also working on a book examining the life and works of Laura Redden Searing, Deaf Poetess and Civil War Correspondent (with Judy Yaeger Jones).
