SINGLE-WORD SYNONYMS
For each phrasal verb in the sentences below,
click on the single-word synonym that best approximates the
meaning of the phrasal verb.
1. After World War II, the United States, the
Soviet Union, Great Britain, and France split up Hitler's
Third Reich and created four administrative zones for the purpose
of establishing complete control.
2. In 1949, the Soviet Union set up a
communist system of government in the eastern zone of Germany
and called it the German Democratic Republic.
3. Unfortunately, many East Germans were dissatisfied
with life in the German Democratic Republic; these people came
